John M. Riley was born in Connecticut and graduated from Fairfield University with a B.S. in accounting. He served as assistant comptroller for a large community action program. John moved to Vermont in 1974, worked in finance and business management for the State of Vermont and then established Capital Accounting Services in 1981.

He has since performed accounting and financial management services for organizations throughout Vermont. He specializes in not-for-profit organizations. In addition, John spent 10 years teaching basic accounting, computer spreadsheet and nonprofit and governmental accounting at the college level.

John enjoys working with boards of directors, nonprofit managers and staff to develop accounting systems, create and monitor budgets, and diagnose and solve problems in financial and management areas. He is well-known for his ability to devise simple solutions for financial problems and for his ability to communicate complex financial concepts and information to boards, managers, and funding agencies.

John lives in Middlesex, Vermont and spends time in the Adirondack Mountains of New York whenever he can. He has two grown sons, a part-time dog, and loves opera.
